While we were waiting for our new boat, includes commissioning, outfitting and shakedown - Leg 2 (Preliminary)

Happy Forthcoming New Year!
Isn't Dan the lucky one! How many females are diesel mechanics experts? During Karen's mechanics class, she field stripped a Yanmar diesel (the same type that we have on our boat), torqued the head, reattached the rocker arm, fuel injectors and fuel lines, adjusted the valves, and bled the engine. Best of all, the engine started on the first turn of the key. Lucky Dan!
In celebration of her becoming the diesel mechanic expert onboard Dakare, Dan took Karen to Tavern on the Green in NYC and then on to Radio City Music hall to see the Rockettes and the Christmas Extravaganza. While in NYC we also went to the new Hayden Planetarium - we highly recommend it. We capped our stay with a great meal in little Italy.
It was a bit chilly in NY so we were glad to get back to the warmth of Florida. The day we arrived back, Ft. Myers tied for second place in the nation for the warmest temperature of the day, a balmy 78.
New Dakare should arrive in Florida on the 12th of January and should be splashed on the 16th.

Happy Holiday Season!
As most things go, deadlines are only meant to be broken. We were informed that the boat will now be shipped December 3rd. That is fine with us. Now we know for sure that the boat will arrive in Ft. Lauderdale after the New Year, which we prefer.
We have taken up a residence in the Las Olas area adjacent to Ft. Lauderdale. We will use that as our staging point while the boat is being commissioned. If you need to reach us after January 3rd, you should try the following two phone numbers: 941 283-9873 (Florida West Coast) and 941 940-7831 (Florida East Coast).
Karen never got to take her Ham exam at the SSCA Gam. They didn't offer it this year, so she is planning to take that and her Captain's exam in January/February over in Ft. Lauderdale.
Under an international mandate (with IMO), it appears that Dan must take a one week course to maintain his Ocean's rating on his captain's license. He'll presumably do that while Karen is getting hers.
We will be leaving in about another week or so to take our Hands-on diesel training class with Yanmar up in New Jersey. Karen has already purchased surgical gloves to keep the grease and dirt out from under her nails. Then we will be off for a short stay in New York. We hope to do the new Hayden planetarium, the Rockets at Radio City Music Hall and dinner at Tavern on the Green. We have been told the food stinks but the ambiance is great.
Hope everyone has a great holiday season.
Update as of November 14, 2000
We heard from the Importer today and we were told that our new boat should be shipped on November 27, by one of two transports, yet to be determined. It will take between 33 and 40 days for the transport to reach Ft. Lauderdale. That puts delivery around the first of the year.
We went to the SSCA Gam and met many of our old friends (and some new ones too.) We found out however that they were not giving the HAM exams there this year and so Karen will have to schedule a test locally here in Ft. Myers. She has inspired me to upgrade my HAM license so I guess the two of us will be studying for those exams.
Update as of October 31, 2000
We had a nice trip back to Washington where we visited with several of our friends. We also had the opportunity to meet up with many of our cruising buddies at the Annapolis boat show. It was good to see everyone and discuss about previous adventures and hear about everyone's' forthcoming plans. Seams that there will be a good contingent of people showing up to both the St. Pete boat show and/or the SSCA GAM in Melbourne. We will see everyone there. Karen is working on her HAM license and hopes to take the test at the GAM.
Word is that our Hylas 54 is proceeding on schedule (well almost...) It is in the test tank at the factory this week and should be shipped shortly thereafter.
Useppa has cooled down and the weather here is absolutely wonderful.

We decided what model of water maker to purchase (SPECTRA) and placed the order at the Annapolis boat show. Also decided to replace our old satellite weather (Vertec) tracking system, which we did not like, with a new OCENS system. From what we could see, it was easily double the functionality at half the price and much easier to use. We'll write that off to another "Live and learn" experience! We also decided on one last major purchase and that was a GPIRB. We always wanted to augment our EPIRB, and now with the GPS enabled units, the time was right.
Prerelease Ver 0.1 of our Web Site is almost complete. Will try to have it finished by October 31. Some details we cannot fill in until after we get the boat, but we think it is a good start for a never ending process. Send us a note with your impressions. We would really appreciate it.
Update as of September 25, 2000
Made the decision to put up our own Web Page and was able to secure our domain name (you know what it is, else you wouldn't be here.) Now to learn how to publish our own Web Site!
Right now we are getting ready to leave for Washington DC to visit with friends. From there, we will be going to the Annapolis boat show and then return to Florida. We have it on our near term agenda to go to both the Ft. Lauderdale boat, the St. Pete boat show and to the SSCA GAM in November.
Sails have been ordered and we have decided on a logo for our new Spinnaker (LOGO).

Just got back from our tip to Taiwan to see our boat being built at the factory. Our Hylas 54 is on schedule to be completed near the end of October with shipment to Ft. Lauderdale taking approximately 40 days. She will go as deck cargo through the Panama Canal. So it looks like Karen's Birthday will be the same as Dakare's.

While traveling without Karen for the first half of the trip, I took a 5 day hiatus to Phuket, Thailand. Saw a lot of nice places including Phang Gna National Park where they filmed the James Bond movie, Man With a Golden Gun.
Bottom line is that we now have added that area to our cruising itinerary.

In addition to the time we spent at the factory in Taiwan, we also spent some time touring the island. Called Formosa by the Portuguese when they came upon it, it truly deserves the that name - "Beautiful." We did the standard touring things. One of the best places we went to was Taroko Gorge. Deep Marble canyons lined with hot springs and white water rivers
