We chose to diverge from the standard installation of three separate air conditioning units to supply the forward, saloon and aft areas of the boat in order to conserve the space required by three 16K BTU air conditioning units. We computed that we would get the same bang-for-the-buck by consolidating two of the 16K BTU systems into 1 24K BTU system using 2 separate air handlers. The space freed up in doing this provided excellent space for mounting and servicing our water maker. We also asked Queen Long to modify the way they ran the ducting for the units, also saving considerable space.

The system, in concert with the installed Isolation Transformer, is capable of being driven both in the United States using 60 HZ 220 VAC and in just about all foreign countries using 50 HZ 220-240VAC. The following is extracted from the Electrical System Installation Guide for the LP-09; Page 7: Cruiseair 230 VAC 60 Hz equipment can be run at 200 VAC in a 50 Hz environment. Rated capacity will be reduced by 17%. A transformer should be used in this case to maintain the lower voltage.

We have run our air conditioning units successfully in Europe and other 50 Hz countries without any problems for 2 years. We have run the units in both the cooling and heating cycle modes. We are aware of other Hylas owners who have had the same experience. Tee key appears to be to have a good isolation transformer.

In addition to the Reverse Heating air systems, we also carry a small ceramic heater. We have found it convenient to use this device from time to time when the power availability dockside is limited or when we want to specifically heat a particular location on the boat.

We had such good luck in our previous Dakare with vented cabinet doors that we commissioned Queen Long to make similar doors for our new Dakare. Ventilation is the key to controlling mold and after 5 years of cruising in new Dakare, as with our experiences in old Dakare, we have not had any mold in the cabinets. However, moisture is always a problem and we use an air dryer to augment the cabinet ventilation during the cool winter months while we are living aboard. This combination has worked well for us.
