Solar Panels
Three Seimans Solar Panels
Dakare has three top of the line Seimans 75 watt solar panels built into the dodger system. The low profile of the solar panels with respect to the mounting location does a very good job of hiding the solar panels. The fixed mount position was utilized to eliminate tedious manual angling of the solar panels and to provide a clean, unobtrusive location to put the panels where they would pretty much be hidden from view. As a result, current production is Latitude dependent. The curves below show the dependency on Latitude (The measurements were taken the same time of the year (In Late Spring) so that eliminates the dependency on declination.) In general, for most of our cruising areas, the solar panels produce between 90 and 140 Amps a day.
The data shown above is for a constant declination of the sun.
Wind Generator
Dakare has a South West Air Wind Gnerator - Model: Air-X (the newest, quietest wind generator of the line.) It is mounted on our arch and has been strategically located to ensure that there is plenty of clearance to avoid accidental contact with the baldes. The unit can produce about 1 to 18 instantaneous Amps/hr depending upon wind speed. Measurement of actual current production is complicated and one is referred to the South West Air Wind Gnerator website for detailed discussions of current production.

Maintenance Items
Alternator, Starter & Winch Motor-
with engine running, batteries fully charged, and a 1 or 2 Amp load on system (a light turned on), voltage to batteries is 13.9 to 14.4 Volts -- voltage remains constant as more loads are turned on, up to the rated output of the alternator
brushes and slip rings or commutators are clean and in good condition
bearings or bushings in good condition
external connections clean, sealed from moisture, and positive terminals are covered
alternator drive belt(s) tight and in good shape
starter solenoid plunger clean and lubricated
solenoid internal contacts clean and not pitted
starter and winch motors get 9.0 Volts or more while operating
