Overview

The Navigation Station has built-in redundancy for all critical navigational systems.  This includes two permanently mounted GPS systems, consisting of a Northstar 951 GPS (cockpit mounted) and a Raytheon 300 WAAS unit.  There are two Raytheon autopilots, each driven by separate Whitlock rotary drives.  Because of space issues, one is mounted on the steering pedestal and is attached via the steering pedestal chain sprockets.  The other is mounted as a direct drive unit attached to the quadrant.  There are also 2 separate navigational computers, backed up with the same software on each unit.  One is an Argonaut laptop and the other is a HP Pavilion.   The computer displays are mirrored in the cockpit using a flat screen daylight LCD.  A Logitech Trackman Live mouse is used in the cockpit to control the navigational software and the display characteristics.  Both computers are networked so critical data files can be easily shared.

The heart of the system uses a KISS approach. It can be seen in the picture below.  Located above the screen is an array of three switches.  Each of these switches controls what hardware is tied together.  The first knob on the left is used to select a specific GPS unit.  GPS signals are provided not only for navigational purposes, but is also supplied to the communications gear (SSB, DSS VHF and e-mail) and safety gear, namely the GPIRB unit.  The right most knob is used to select which autopilot is used.  Each autopilot is fully redundant, meaning that each has its own controller, compass, rudder sensor, and display units.  A simple flip of the switch allows the other autopilot to be activated without any other intervention.  The middle knob selects which of 4 possible methods will be used to control the autopilot.  Way point signals can be supplied by either of the two GPS units or either of the two computer systems.  Setting this dial to the desired source will automatically make that unit control the autopilot.  The system was designed to limit the amount of complexity required while sailing to use the system.  In practice we have found this system very easy to use and easy to manipulate while sailing.  We have been asked if we would make any changes to the system since it was installed and the answer is no.  We find that the three switches provide all the flexibility we need, the redundancy we sought, and ease-of-use we wanted.
