Oil Polishing System
Oil Polishing

This unit polishes the engine oil. It performs the following functions:
1) Filters the oil
2) Replenishes the oil with additives
3) Evaporates water from the oil
The manufacturer claims that if this system is used, one never needs to change the oil in the engine and that the "polishing canister" only needs to be replaced every 1500 hours. They do recommend changing the engine oil filter once every year mainly due to the fact that the it is made of paper and will break down over time.
The oil polishing system is built by Puradyn. The purifier siphons off 10% of the engine oil flowing through the engine. This oil is filtered and then distilled using a heat based evaporation mechanism in the upper chambers of the oil purifier. Oil additives are continuous replaced by filter cartridge used in the oil purifier. Each cartridge lasts approximately 1500 engine hours. Standard oil filters are replaced on a yearly basis, primarily - according to manufacturer statements - because the filters are made of paper and they should be replaced after that period of time to eliminate the possibility of cartridge (paper) degradation.
The PurifinerTM is a high-efficiency bypass electrical mobile oil refiner designed to remove both solid and liquid contaminants before they can accumulate and cause engine equipment damage.
By constantly removing oxidized particles, soot, and all other solid and liquid contaminants, the PurifinerTM keeps oil constantly clean, maintains the intended viscosity and drastically reduces additive depletion by removing contaminants before they can seriously deplete the additives. This process enables the oil to provide maximum lubricating, cooling and sealing properties, thus maximizing the life of engines and equipment.

This system appears to be working OK. . We were impressed with the job that Queen Long did in installing the unit. However, one modification that we had to make back in the US in order to get the Oil Pressure guage to read correctly was to remove the pressure guage from the manifold as provided by Queen Long and to tee the guage directly off the low pressure alarm on the engine block. This has eliminated the problem in reading the pressure guage.
To date we have changed the oil and oil filters as recommended by Yanmar. However, the beauty of this system will be realized while cruising in the South Pacific where we hope to realize the follwoing benefits:
 Carry fewer spare oil filters
 Carry less engine oil
Reduce the frequency of disposing of waste engine oil and oil filters
Potentially eliminate the environmentally unsafe methods that are used in 3rd world countries to dispose of waste oil
If our cruising grounds were limited to US waters we may not have installed this unit. However, during our shakedown cruise in New England, we were appalled by the lack of cooperation we encountered by marinas and fueling docks to dispose of our used oil.
Our experience with this unit after 4 years of sailing and over 2000 engine hours is that it is a hassle free system that provide insurance against the potentially fragile paper oil filters normally used with an engine. It has allowed us to change the oil (Yes, we still do it because old habilts are hard to break) at our convenience instead of out in the middle of the ocean as would have been the case if we had not had this filter. We would recommend the purchase and use of this sytem.
Oil Change System for Genset and Main Engine
The Hylas 54 comes standard with an oil change system, Pictured below, that handles both the Genset and the Engine. The emergency manual bilge pump and the Smart Balmar regular can also be seen in the picture.
