On Dakare, we chose to use Dyform wire rather than the standard rigging wire. Although a bit more expensive, it's strength and stretch characteristics made the choice a no brainer.

On Dakare we chose, on the advise of Selden Masts in England, to use Staylocks on the lowers and Swaged fittings on the uppers. Their arguments were convincing and so we did it. Little did we realize that Selden would go out on the lowest bid possible to a now defunct and bankrupt French company for the swaged fittings. All of the major swage fittings for all of our 14 mm wire failed. We must add that they failed in the worst way possible and we wee lucky not to lose our mast. It appeared that the 16 mm swages held. Since that incident however, we decided to replace the swages with Staylocks in 2002 and now our mast is mostly Staylocks. Since converting over, we have had no problems. We highly recommend either Staylocs or Norseman (which we used on our previous boat.)

Stays'l Tack	We have made recommendations to the factory to change the way the Stays'l deck plate is attached to the Stays'l tang. We suggest that any person purchasing a Hylas look closely at this deck connection and decide for themselves what is "Proper." Shown is the elk hide tang cover that is effective in preventing staysail sheets from hanging up when tacking.

Boom	Internal topping lift to cockpit; powder coated to RAL 9010; one spare under boom slider (511-617-17) pre-mounted; Boom RCB out haul track and car system(511-617-07) Outlhaul parted within first year of operation. Was bad design for turning block at end of boom. Selden has not corrected this problem as of 8/2002. We know of several Hylas's that have lost their outhaul on the way down to the Caribbean from Florida. Outhaul Capture Block	This item was a retrofit to correct a deficiency in the Selden design of the boom. The outhaul at the boom end was subject to severe chafe problems and several boats have lost their outhauls for this reason. Dakare had a special "capture" block fabricated in St. Thomas and this seems to have solved the problem.

Rigging Screw Covers	6 anodized rigging screw covers for shrouds with 16 mm holes. Decided not to use factory supplied rigging screw covers as they did not fit properly and required retrofitting on main shroud to fit properly. Had Summerfield fabricate elk hide screw covers which seem to be a better choice.

Backstay Adjusters

While in Marmaris we had our Backstay adjusters inspected and we found that one of them needed some serious repair work, including an internal rod replacement.

We contracted with Hood in Marmaris to do the work.

Correspondence with Robert and Judy Breem of Sailtec:

For -30 cylinder the (safety) pop-off pressure can be set at 4000 psi.

The systems, properly rebuilt, will withstand 100 bar of nitrogen or 350 bar of hydraulic pressure. Normal charge pressure for cylinders is about 100psi of nitrogen. For vangs, the normal charge is 500psi of nitrogen.

You may install the cylinders upside down if you wish. They will work. Now you cannot do that with any integral(pump handle).

We do not recommend this but you won't hurt anything. The comment about keeping seals lubricated, all you have to do is use the cylinder. If you're in port a long time, simply pump the cylinders to bathe seals in oil..@ once/week/ You can use a nice lubricant on the wiper seal and/or clean salt off regularly.

Mast & Mast Steps Repainting

We are very happy with the work that Demir performed and we recommend them to anyone considering repainting their mast. In addition, they did a complicated deck repair job for us that exceeded our expectations. A previous rigger, one in Marathon, FL, USA, dropped a heavy piece of rigging hardware onto our deck, cracking the surface of our treaded deck gelcoat. Although it did not cause any structural damage, it was a cosmetic blight which we tried countless times to repair in various ports in which we stopped. All previous attempts to repair the damage was not satisfactory. Demir gets our seal of approval!

Below is technical correspondence from Selden with respect to materials used on the mast:

The gray sticky material separating the mast steps from the mast is a non-curing compound called Evomastic. You can also use Duralac which is easier to work with.

The locking adhesive used on the screws are Loctite 639 which has very good insulating properties.

Upgraded Running Back SS Pad Eyes

We felt that the standard pad eyes for the running backs that came with the boat were not as robust as we would like so we replaced them with much larger SS D-Rings. We were told by the rigger that the upgraded D-Rings had a safe working load of 35,000 lbs, a factor of 19 higher than originally supplied.
