We were fortunate enough to purchase our Spectre unit while they were still offering a life-time warranty on the unit.

The water maker is entirely located in the forward berth area under the storage area for the berth.  This area is typically filled with air conditioner equipment and ducting.  By re-engineering that space we were able to free up almost the entire berth area for the water maker, makeing the water maker both easy to access and easy to service.

Improvements:

In October 2005, we made a modification to the Spectra water system power service.  We installed larger diameter wire then originally supplied by the installer.  This was done because we measured the voltage drop at the Spectra control box and it was not to spec.  We also installed a relay (switching circuit) so the current draw for the water maker was not being supplied by the control box but rather b y the batteries directly providing an even better operating voltage supply.  With the changes noted, the water maker is performing to spec.  (See Salinity Performance Tests Below)


Communications with Spectra:

Dan: The SC-1 chemical is good for at least 6 months. If the unit is to be stored for long periods you may find it better to use Propylene Glycol Potable Water System Antifreeze which is good for a year. A lot depends on the temperature the system is stored at and how clean the system is. Thanks, Dean

... if one of your Shurflo pumps is turning on and off, then you’re pressure switch is set incorrectly. There is a 5/64” allen screw on the base of the pump that sets the cut-out pressure. They should be set to 125 PSI, if the pump is turning off before that pressure, then try tightening that set screw (clockwise increases the pressure, counter clockwise decreases it). Hope this helps.

salinity content of water, temperature, pump pressure, etc.  In August 2008, we measured an all time low value of 258 PPM in the Med.  The Med has a notoriously higher salt content than the Atlantic, so we were impressed with that value.)
