Dakare has the following weather monitoring capabilities on board:

Dedicated Furuno Weather Fax
Four levels of gray printed on 8-inch wide white paper.
Advanced microprocessor controlled technology.
Can be programmed for automatic on/off operation.
Operates across all fax and SSB frequencies -- from 80-160 KHz and 2-25 MHz.
Powerful frequency synthesizer offers multichannel flexibility, receiving frequencies ranging from 80 KHz to 25 MHz in 100 Hz steps.
FAX5 active antenna coupler option.
Contains 200 user-defined channels, 376 preprogrammed channels, 30-program schedule timer with sleep function, and will even scan available frequencies for the clearest channel.
Can also be used with an optional integral NAVTEX receiver module.
Also available: FAX210 -- 10" paper fax, FAX214 -- 14" paper fax

 Dedicated Furuno NAVTEX
Compact, lightweight receiver/printer fits just about anywhere. High quality 9" x 7" dot matrix thermal printer uses 4.4" wide paper. Choice of 35 or 70 characters per line. Reception at 518 KHz. Optimum station selection with L/L input. Receiver/printer functions in a continuous, unattended mode. Optional NX5 antenna coupler. Any station can be selected, but emergency messages are received on a priority basis. Up to 66 message ID's can be stored for 66 hours. Backlit, easy-to-use touch pad keys. Audible/visual alarms for SAR alerts. May be used as a data logger or peripheral printer with NMEA data input. Meets SOLAS/

 Electronic Baroscope Barometer

Robert E. White Instruments

Boston, MA 02110
800 992-3045
617 742-3045
The remarkable Baroscope is a solid-state recording barometer which displays a 24-hour or a 7-day pressure curve; (4"W x 3 1/8"H) LCD. In the 24-hour display, the pressure scale is expanded by a factor of 4, dramatically detailing the most subtle changes in pressure. At the top of the screen, date, time and pressure in MilliBars are displayed simultaneously. A "Gale Warning" feature allows  the Baroscope to  trigger an audible alarm if the pressure's drop-rate exceeds a selected value.

While the Furuno Weather Fax and NAVTEX systems work independent of any other equipment, most other communications equipment requires a radio, computer, modem and software to work.  The list above does not include computer and modem equipment.  That can be found under  Communications  and Computer Systems.

The pictures shown to the left can be obtained with the WxToImg and the software is compatible with Ocens Stat2000 APT system.  Cover photo for this page is a composite image, one of about 20+ options, including 3D.

The system can also be purchased to run independently from Ocens.  The system, purchased this way,  is about 2 to 4 times cheaper than most commercially available systems.  The fantastic thing about his system is that it outperforms my commercial system (Shown above) by many fold and has a greater deal of flexibility in how the wx imagery is displayed.  We don't normally advertise products but this is a case where I think an exception is warranted.  We are really impressed with this system and anyone who is interested in this type of technology should give it due consideration.

Some  useful weather conversion units:

1 atm = 760 mmHg = 33.9 ftH2O = 14.7 PSI = 30 inHg
Abbreviations: Atm = atmosphere, mmHg = millimeters of mercury, PSI = pounds per square inch, ftH2O = feet of water, inHg = inches of mercury. The unit feet of water' is not common, but included because it can be useful. For every hundred feet below the surface of water the pressure increases about three atmospheres. The running equation above (It just keeps going!) shows the common pressure units. You can use it to change between any two of the units, for example:
760 mmHg = 14.7 PSI.
The official SI unit of pressure, the Pascal, Pa, is not often used in chemistry because it is such a small unit. One atmosphere is about equal to 100,000 Pascals, or you could say that one atmosphere is approximately equal to 100 kPa.

 1 atm = 1.01325 E5 Pa = 101.325 kPa

To convert from InHg to hPa: InHg x 33.775

Note: Atmospheric Pressure decreases 1 hPa for every 8.8 meters of elevation
