Warranty Issues:
There is an undocumented fix for the fuel injectors on the 4JH3-DTE. The 5 fuel injectors nozzle holes on each fuel injector tip are .001mm too large. As a result, the engine tends to be more smoky than it should be. The fix for this is to replace the fuel injector tips with the tips for the 4JH3-HTE engine. There is no Yanmar bulletin on this fix. A contact point at Yanmar in Green Cove, Illinois who approved the warranty fix and who is very familiar with this issue is Bill Schreor. The point of Contact we used was Rendell Animoni and Richard from Trintrac Ltd, in Trinidad (868) 672-5329.

Ordering Parts:
Note: A not well documented point on the Yanmar Service Manuals for the 4JH3-DTE
There are 3 Manuals:
 The General Manual (HINSHI-H8009)
 The Addendum Manual (HINSHI-H10-009)
The Installation Manual (For Pleasure Boats) Rev. 3 (HISNI-H8010-R4)
You should get two service manuals for the 4JH3-DTE engine. We found that the service reps at Mac Boring (The largest Yanmar distributor in the US) were unaware of the fact that there are 2 manuals for this engine. The installation manual has a lot of useful information and it can be of great service in debugging the electical wiring, proper techniques for installation, a tremendousamount of engine technical data that may be found useful in diagnosing future problems, and a compendium of optional accessories (We wish we had this manual when ordering our boat.)
You should get both the General and Addendum manuals. The Addendum contains indispensable information on the engine and that information is not duplicated in the General manual. (See for example: Test Running.) We strongly suggest that if you want parts, manuals, etc., that you contact:
Tony (800 622 5364 X220)
at Mac Boring in New Jersey. He not only knows all this stuff, he is a great person to work with and you will find him very helpful.

Cooling System Recommendations
Yanmar recommends that you use Texaco Long Life antifreeze (Orange in color) in your engine because the normal (Green in color) antifreeze is high in silicates which will cause problems down the line.
Below are critical hose replacements (spares) for the Yanmar engine. Page references refer to the Yanmar manual.

Fuel and Oil Purification:
Transmission:
The transmission used is a Japanese Hurth transmission.
Model KMH4A hydraulic wet-multiple disk clutch with 8 degrees down angle drive.
Reduction ratio 2.45:1 (Validated during Commissioning)
 Lube oil capacity 2.0 liters.
Cleaning Turbo Charger
We have been using CRC 6-56 to clean our Turbo. We spray about every 100 hours for about 10-15 seconds with the engine running at 2500 RPM's and then we let the engine run for at least another 10-15 minutes before shutting it down. We understand that Yanmar makes a similar product, that it is very expensive, and difficult to obtain in that many Yanmar people do not know about the product. Several other Hylas owners are now using this same product.

Special Notes:
Replacement Suggestions:
1) Use Large SS Washers supplied in Spares Kit for Shaft Lock to spread apart drive shaft monting flange for removal and insertion of Flange. Remove all bolts (11) and place SS washer in split on flange and by inserting and tightening the end two bolts of the 6 drive shaft tightening bolts, you can easily remove and insert the drive shaft flange by hand without tapping with a hammer.
2) Slide off drive shaft flange and remove keyway. To remove the keyway, remove the set screw and then use the Special SS Extraction Screw labeled "Extraction Screw for Drive Shaft Flange" supplied in the Spares Kit for the Shaft Lock to extract the keyway from the drive shaft. Use a socket & wrachet to tighten the Special SS Extraction Screw until the keyway pops out
3) When reattaching drive shaft flange, align the flange with the keyway and slide the flange over the shaft making sure you use the SS Washers supplied in Spares Kit for Shaft Lock to spread apart the flange. Move the flange over the drive shaft until the center alignment hole in the flange exposes the dimple in drive shaft. Tighten the center alignment bolt (This is the bolt with the retaining wire attached through the head of the bolt.

1) See Special Notes: for removing / replacing PYI Dribless Shaft Seal
