(and Lucca)
Below are our travels along the Cote D' Azur, France, and Lucca, in Italy, on our way to Florence
Flash Tour - various scenes from our trip through the Cote d'Azur
We were somewhat disappointed with St. Tropez and only took one picture while there. Obviously, just like the Tour Books said, it's only claim to fame was in the 60's when Bridgett Bardot walked the not-so-great beaches of St. Tropez. We also went to Cannes, Antibes and Monte Carlo. Cannes was attractive and very busy (I guess there is no out-of-season for Cannes.) There were many boats in the harbor, but the most prevalent place for yachts seemed to be Antibes. Monte Carlo gave Antibes a run for its money wrt yachts, but Antibes won hands down.

Driving our camper van in Monte Carlo was a real treat. We found what appeared to be a good parking space in Monte Carlo... Not! Call it the "herding effect" or whatever, but clearly the police did not agree with my take of the situation nor that of all the other people who were parked in that area when we first arrived. Karen and I had been gone for less than 5 minutes when we decided to return to the camper to pick up another item. When we got there, less than 10 minutes after parking, not only did we see two Monte Carlo policemen ticketing our car (and the others) but they had already put a boot on our vehicle. They were clearly sending the message that they didn't want to see a camper on their streets.

It only took a few minutes to pay the fine and get the boot removed but it proved to be an expensive day. The police directed us to the only camper parking area available, and of course it was way out of town. Between the ticket, boot, parking and cab fares to get into town, that visit costs us over $100 Euros. Phew! Given all of that, was it worth seeing? I think so, but I can also say that I have little interest in going back unless someone wants to bankroll our visit!
When we left the Cote d'Azur we stopped overnight in the historical, walled town of Lucca.
Map of Lucca showing our camping area just outside the main city wall. We never heard of Lucca before this trip but it turned out to be a pleasant highlight of our trip. Unfortunately, something didn't agree with Karen the night before and she spend most of the following day recovering. She did get a chance to see a bit of Lucca, but while she was sleeping, Dan did a major walk-about.
