Venice and the surrounding areas.

Venice is in the middle of the chart above.  We staid at a marina in Chioggia shown in the bottom of the chgart.
It took 3 ferries and 1 bus to reach Venice from there and took a little over an hour to do.

Marina vs anchoring in Venice
A chart of Chioggia.

The marina that we stayed at, Sottomarina, is shown as the greyed area in the lower middle of the chart.  Accommodations there were great, the food good and the prices reasonable, especially compared to Venice.  Reservations are recommended since they do not have much room for transients.  Many of the slips cannot accommodate deep draft vessels.  We are 2.4 meters and almost couldn't get a slip.
The unknown anchorage:

A chart of Lido showing a little known but good "Free" anchorage next to Isola Poveglia, which is mostly used by locals and not published in any cruising guide.  From this anchorage you can easily dinghy to the Lido Yacht Club.  The Club extends hopitality to foreign yachts, providing access to club facilities, water, trash disposal and showers.  Groceries can be conveniently obtained near the yacht club and Venice is one 15 minute  bus ride away.  There is ample depth.
