></A></B></div> <bR> <bR> <div> <B>Our Second Winter In Turkey</B></div> <bR> <bR> <bR> <div> We spent the winter of 05/06 at Marmaris Marina, in the same slip that we had spent the previous winter. We came back to the marina to have work done on our Selden Mast, which was suffering form faulty fabrication problems.   Much had changed at the marina since our previous stay.  The marina had been sold to Setur, a group which owns and runs a number of marinas here in Turkey.  There was a change in management and some staff.  Some changes have been made to the marina facilities like the addition of a cruisers room in which we can hold functions.  The room includes an ADSL line, TV and projection equipment.  The new marina management did not honor the previous years discount of 10% for the slip fees and as a result, quite a few cruisers moved from Netsel to Yacht Marine, about a half hour Domish (bus) ride away.  Netsel is convenient to town which is the most attractive feature of the marina, whereas Yacht Marine is a half hour away.  Yacht Marine makes up for that by expanding their facilities to include wifi throughout the marina, accessible form each and every boat, a small gym, swimming pool, restaurant & bar with regular happy hours and a number of parties for yachties including a major trip to the Istanbul Boat Show.  Mr. Bilgen, the owner of Yacht Marine, has sponsored this trip for two successive years in the running.  He covers most cost except for the hotel room in the  Side Hotel in Istanbul (28 Euros/day) and fuel for the bus to take us there and back.  On the other side of the coin, Netsel sponsors an XMAS party where they give away some decent gifts like a free haul out, bottom painting, etc.  This year we won round trip coach transportation between the marina and Dolaman Airport, which was a very nice prize.  Yacht Marine slip fees are less than Netsel, but Netsel offers free 220V 16 Amp service for live aboards whereas at Yacht Marine, one must pay about 24-30 cents a kilowatt-hour.  When we computed that additional costs we found for our life style, that Netsel was a more cost effective option than Yacht Marine with the added benefit of being closer to town.  However, the availability of a wifi network at Yacht Marine still looks attractive.</div> <bR> <bR> <div> <B> <A NAME="istanbul_boat_show"><IMG BORDER="0" SRC="1x1.gif" HEIGHT="1" Starting in the fall of 2005 and going into the winter of 05-06, we pulled our mast and repainted it.  It was a big job.  We selected Demir in Netsel Marina, Marmaris to do the work.   All the electrical connections had to be removed and the  standing and running rigging had to disconnected.  Then the mast had to be removed.  That turned out to be a problem in that the crane at the marina was not large enough to remove the mast and a larger crane had to be brought in to remove the mast.  The extraction of the mast went smoothly.  All the components of the mast then were stripped off: spreaders, mast steps, winches & winch mounting plates, internal luff rod, motor, mast mounted fairlead blocks, gooseneck, vang hardware, running lights, antennas and mast head electrical fittings for electronics, spinnaker pole hardware and track, and shivs for halyard exits.  Then the real work began.  All the paint had to be removed.  This was a tedious job in that the paint had to be removed from all the recesses and all the parts that were removed, e.g., mast steps, etc., also had to have the paint removed.  The mast was washed with solvent and painted with primer and International white paint.  To do the painting, the painters created a makeshift plastic tent to contain the paint fumes ad then they sprayed the mast.  They did an excellent paint job.  Once done, everything had to be done in reverse.  The mast is left out of the boat for the winter and will be restepped in March.  Demir not only did a good job, but they were very supportive in many other ways, allowing Dan to use their facilities to do small jobs like machine polishing many of the stainless steel  hinges, straps, foot plates, screen retainers, etc. on Dakare,  </div> <bR> <bR> <DIV ALIGN="LEFT"></DIV> <div>
