Levante Basin Rally SIGs and Related Information:
This page iis dedicated to information exchange for the Rally members.
It includes Special Interest Group (SIG) areas as well as Rally member contributions.
Communications SIG:
Chair: Fred (Escape Key)
Fred has volunteered to be the communications coordinator for the rally fleet.
Initial Communication: Request for Information
Dear Levant Basin Cruisers,
"Blessed is he who, having nothing to say, refrains from giving wordy evidence of that fact".
"Escape Key" will be the communications vessel for our group during the LBC and, as such, I'm allowed to violate the above. By way of beginning, could you please let me know the following:
- Do you have an operational HF transceiver?
- Do you have a 406mHz EPIRB?
- Do you have a VHF w/ int'l channels 6, 8, 10, 16, 67, 69, 72, 73, 77? (If not, maybe get one).
- As an emergency link either in or out when no other communication medium is available:
- Do you have a satellite phone that could be used?
- Do you have a mobile phone with a roaming option in some (which?) / all of the places we'll visit?
- If you have suggestions to enhance our communications experience: how we could set a communications schedule, morning net, evening net, etc. , please let me know.
By responding you'll also validate my address list. We'll be back aboard at Marti Marina by April 25th AM, hope to splash the 29th and set off May 1. Our boat email address is N1TSB@winllnk.org. You can respond to that address now if you wish as it's auto-fowarded to this land-address.
We're excited about this cruise as we sit in SW France and watch it snow on the palm tree on April 10. No excuse for that.
Fair winds, calm seas,
Jane and Fred

Communication 2: Protocols and Hailing
The purpose of the Comm function is to provide a means of exchanging information and assistance, especially under way.
Comm Channel: We will use VHF74 on high power under way, low power in the harbor. When 74 is not available, we will use 71. Vessels are expected to monitor 74 and 16.
Net: (a) We will conduct a net each morning that we are aboard on the comm channel beginning after the closing of the Mediterranean Cruisers Net. The purpose is to exchange information for short-term activities or issues. We'd expect this to run from approx 0900-0915.
(b) When the group is split for whatever reason and vessels are out of VHF range, we'll repeat the net on HF 4030kHz USB at 0915 or as close after as possible.
Comm Under Way Overnight: Once every 4 hours, at an agreed on time, we'll have a roll call while under way over night.
Emergency contact: Steve on Equus has graciously volunteered his Iridium satellite phone as an emergency (only) contact number. Dialing instructions from abroad will follow [when I get them - the number should probably not appear on the web site].

A recommendation has been made that divers in the Levante Rally consider joining the Divers Alert Network (DAN) and as a member of that organization, that divers take advantage of the medical coverage insurance associated with that program; Further information can be obtained from the DAN website: WWW.DiversAlertNetwork.org or call 1 800 444-2671. Further questions can be directed to the Chairs of the Sig.

From Gary, SV Toucan Tango, http://forecast.uoa.gr/forecastnew.html This is the university of Athens web site. You can get every bit of weather info you ever wanted for anywhere in the med on this site. It's graphic (similar to Poseiden). There is a section that is only for the Aegean and a section for the whole med. For my money, it's hands down the best site in the med and has a high rate of accuracy.

Looks like you and we are the only pet-equipped vessels on this trip. I don't know if your are aware of it, but as of late last year the EU required pets to be "chipped" (I think in the UK tattoeing is still acceptable for some period).

Wintering after the Rally in Abu Tig, The Red Sea Riviera
|
Thank you for your enquiry with regards to berthing at Abu Tig Marina. I can confirm we have available berthing for the period you mentioned at a rate of US$ 150 per month or US$ 10 per day. Water will be charged at US$ 4.50 per 1000 lit and Electricity at US$ 0.135 per kWh (these rates apply to vessels under 16m LOA only and are subject to 10% Gov. Sales Tax so hope you can squeeze into a 16m slot!?).
Coming from the North, the boat will need to check in at Port Said or Port
Tawfik (Suez) before you arrive at the marina (All boats must check into a
Port of Entry before arriving at the marina). Get the Shipping Agent to make
a sailing permit for 'Hurghada' and come straight to the marina. Once the
boat is are here we will get an Agent to complete the papers required from
Hurghada Port.
All foreign flagged boats are liable for a Customs Fee, which will be done
with the Agent in Hurghada, along with the other paperwork.
Customs Fee:
LE 250 for the first four months
LE 500 for the next four months
LE 1000 for the final four months
LE 100 for yachts staying less than one month (you can not pay month by
month - either 1 month or 4 months)
Rough Cost Estimation for Official Fees for up to 1 month stay (US$ 150),
Cost Breakdown: Agency Fee US$ 60, Various Port Fees (calculated on LOA and
tonnage), etc US$ 65, Customs Fee (1 month) & stamps US$ 25, (Passport Visa's
are extra US$ 20 for each Passport).
For a longer stay, you will have to pay around US$ 250 for each 4 month
period, plus the Customs Fee on top (e.g. first 4 months add LE 250, next 4
months add LE 500 and so on). This US$ 250 includes all the various fees in
Hurghada Port and the Agency fee. Foreign flagged boats may stay up to one
year from the date of arrival. After the one year boats need to be bonded
for four months or leave the country for the same period.
The Agent in Port Said for the Suez Canal is; Mr. Nagib Latif, Felix
Maritime Agency, Tel: +20 66 333 132, Fax: +20 66 333 510, Mobile: +20 12
211 9365, Email: flx@intouch.com. The transit of the Suez Canal for the
average size cruising yacht should cost you around US $ 450, including the
Agent and all the other additional fees.
Other interesting facts can be found in the Red Sea Pilot book, published by
Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd. (www.imray.com), and on the Cruisers website Noonsite: http://www.noonsite.com/
There are also regular direct charter flights to many airports in Europe
from Hurghada International airport (around 22km from El Gouna) for very
reasonable rates or domestic flights to Cairo direct from our airport in El Gouna.
Our travel agency in El Gouna, Pro Tours: protours@orascom.net can help with
flights and also organise trips in Egypt, such as a Nile cruise in Luxor /
Aswan, a trip to the Pyramids in Cairo, or Alexandria.
Insurance companies shown below, we have WiFi for internet, satellite TV at each berth and telephone (telephone connection is extra).
Hope this helps and please let us know if you would like to confirm.

Pirate Party with EMYR, Girne
|
Dear Friends,
As you know we will be attending the EMYR Costume Pirate Party dinner dance in Girne, Northern Cyprus. For the EMYR this is the biggest and most enthusiastic party on their itinerary. Each group within the EMYR is introduced and each group then has the opportunity to entertain the others with a skit, pantomime, song, poem, etc. We will be introduced and have the opportunity to entertain.
Here in Marmaris the theme for our group that is building momentum is Barbarossas' Buccaneers. Some have already made and or purchased the makings of costumes. Having seen our group start this out enthusiastically we have put pen to paper for a suggested song for those in our group which choose to get involved and entertain the EMYR after our group is introduced.
We have picked a song with an easy melody and no hard to reach notes. The lyrics have been marinised and will be easy to follow from a song sheet. The tune you will recognise. If Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin) can get away with this then so can we.
The song we propose is "Wandering Star" from the musical Paint Your Wagon, here are the marinised words.
We were born under wandering stars
We were born under wandering stars
Waves are made for rolling
Sails are made to tack
We've never seen a port
That didn't look better looking back
We were born under wandering stars
Calms can make us prisoners
And the wind can set us free
Salt can burn our eyes
Our fellow sailors make us smile
Home is made for coming from
For dreams of going to
Which with any luck will soon come true
We were born under wandering stars
We were born under wandering stars
We do know what pleases us and that is while at sea
When we wave goodbye it's not forever just for now
We were born under wandering stars
Wandering wandering stars
Calms can make us prisoners
And the wind can set us free
Salt can burn our eyes
Our fellow sailors make us smile
Home is made for coming from
For dreams of going to
Which with any luck will soon come true
We were born under wandering stars
We were born under wandering stars
When we get to Egypt tie us to the quay
For we'll begin to roam
And soon you'll know where we will be
We were born under wandering stars
Wandering wandering stars

Finike Mooring Rates Calculator
|
Thank you very much for your kind e-mail.
It is very nice to hear that you are organising a rally including Finike marina on its route.
It is always a big pleasure for us to be a part of international yachting events.
We will reserve berths for the rally boats on the requested date and assist their passport formalities.
Check out and passport facilities will be provided free of charge (except any possible official charges)
To give you an idea about the mooring fees, I'm enclosing a price calculator. You can also calculate
our long term mooring fees from this table.
Please, let us know if there is anything we can do for your rally (other than any financial suppots
as Setur company do not give me this chance)
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Yours Sincerely,
Caglar Altuntas
Marina Director
(Note: We have used the attached calculator which shows the cost to be about $25/EU20 for a 10 meter boat and $43/EU33 for a 17 meter boat. [I am told that there is currently a 20% reduction in these prices for Levante Rally Participants and Bill (SSF) is trying to get an even higher discount.]
To use the spread sheet: Double click on the table below to load it. Enter your personal info into the yellow areas. ALSO: for those of you a bit more inquisitive, a lot of interesting financial information can be gleamed about marinas in Turkey, currency exchange rates, etc., by purveying the various workseets included in the spreadsheet. Finike Haulouts
|
As you are aware our rally starts in Finike on May 10th. The marina in Finike has agreed to handle our clearing out at no cost. The marina has very competitive prices for haul out. For Soleil Sans Fin at 14.5 meters the haul out, pressure wash and re-launch after 4 days costs $576 USD. This is the cheapest price we could find amongst the marinas on the Turkish south coast that we contacted. Soleil Sans Fin is booked out for May 3. If you haven't yet organized your haul out you can contact the Finike marina at catunas@seturmarinas.com for a quote. Karen aboard Dakare is contacting the Finike marina to organise a setting sail party for May 9. Watch this space. See you soon.

Egypt costs
&
Suez Transit Fees
|
We have been working on lower costs and improved facilities in Egypt and can confirm the following for Port Said which is a better deal than we previously reported to you.
We are now being told we will be in a marina rather than a portion of a commercial harbour. A year ago this marina was under construction, it now appears it is finished enough for us to use it. I am assured there is power, water and that the facility is secure. We can now consider doing some of our touring of Egypt from Port Said. The costs are as follows.
1. Entry into Egypt $52 US per boat, visas are issued upon entry.
2. Marina fees $13 US per boat per night.
3. Exit charges $20 US per boat
For those that may be transiting the Suez after the 2005 levante basin has ended we have arranged the following prices for consideration.
1. $8 US per ton as measured by the canal authority.
2. $20 US per boat port clearance fee.
3. $128 US per boat ministry of transport fee.
4. $100 US per boat agents (Felix) fee.
In Alexandria there is a newly finished French built marina that is now probably available. We will see Ron from Emperor in Marmaris starting on Sunday while he spends a week getting ready for the season. We will ask Ron to contact Mohammed in Alexandria and finalise this. Otherwise we will remain in our original spot in Alexandria.
Enjoy the final few weeks of preparation before starting the cruising season.

Varius Things
|
FYI we have a few extras available with our logo...
1no Polo size small 18 lira
6no Scarf 10 lira ( its plain white with one large logo and makes an excellent table runner or pillowcase if you don't want a scarf!)
3 no Vests size XL ( these have the logo on the back only and have blue trim. they are 55cm and fit me loosely but you have to take them up at the top on both sides to get a good fit on women as they are designed for men!)
All of the above will be returned to the manufacturer if no one wants them as they were extras. Please let me know asap as I will return them next week.
Also on the subject of pork... it is available in Cyprus and we have a Cypriot resident with us "Emperor ". I will ask him if we can arrange a large frozen pork delivery for all of us when we are there from his butcher. EU products are available in Cyprus. Alternatively pork is available in the supermarkets ( I have also bought quail there!).
Otherwise after Greece the next available place for pork is probably Lebanon although I haven't bought any and definitely in Herzliya where I have bought.
Hope this helps! Let me know on the merchandise!

SSCA Bulletin
|
Below please find an article sent to the SSCA in February 2005 for their Commodores Bulletin. They said it would be in the May issue.
From Bill Cote and Jean Panepinto, Commodores
SOLEIL SANS FIN, Mediterranean activities
During the 2004 season we joined the Eastern Mediterranean Yacht Rally (EMYR) and enjoyed the seven week tour of Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt with a side trip to Jordan. For any who can join the EMYR it is an event not to be missed. For us these countries have been by far the most exotic of our time in the Med. We enjoyed it so much that in 2005 we are returning but this time for the entire season as there is so much to see. We only scratched the surface in 2004. During our winter stay here in Marmaris, Turkey, we have organised a group of 12 yachts that we will lead on the 2005 Levante Basin Cruise. Ten of these yachts are members of the SSCA, Soleil Sans Fin, Dakare, Equus, Ginny, Kelaerin, Moonraker, Two Step, Escape Key, Sea Swallow and Wayward Wind. We have been able to organise all our harbours and officialdom in advance through the Internet. Every harbour master and marina operator has been extremely helpful. We will keep all our organisation information and make it available to any SSCA members who wish to take this cruise in the future. We thank Hasan Kacmaz, organiser of the EMYR for the last 16 years, for paving the road ahead of us and making cruising the Levante Basin possible.
Our cruise includes a combination of anchorages, new marinas and old historical town harbours and walls. The cruise will start about May 15 in Finike, Turkey and end in Alexandria, Egypt about mid August, along the way we will visit the Island of Cyprus, two harbours in Syria, two harbours in Lebanon four harbours in Israel and three harbours on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. We will also take an overland trip through the Holy Land and into Jordan to enjoy the Red Sea. The crews on our group of 12 boats have been very active during the winter organising exotic land tours with various tour operators and have put together an exciting list of places that we will see including Palmyra, Crac De Chevalier, Damascus, Beirut, the Baakaa Valley, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Eilat, Aquaba, Cairo, The Pyramids, Luxor, Aswaan, Sharm Al Sheikh and many others. The cruise shirts and hats are nearly ready as are the boats. We look forward to an exciting season. You can see all the boats, the cruise planning and follow our progress at www.dakare.com/levante/rally.htm.
Once again this season Soleil Sans Fin will be organising the Mediterranean Cruisers Net on 8122 at 0530 UTC each morning from April 1 to October 31. This season will include for the first time on the net lots of input from the Levante basin countries. If you are interested in Participating in the Net as a controller or as a weather person one day each week please contact us at soleilsansfin@aol.com
Smooth Sailing.

Dear Friends,
The manager of the Finike marina has hired a helicopter to photograph his marina on May 11. He has asked if we could dress ship with flags to enhance the photography. If you wish to help out please fly your flags.
On May 10th the desk in the marina office will have a sign up list for the tour on May 11. If you are coming on the tour please sign up.
Our group discussion on May 9 at 4pm will be held at a venue to be decided by Karen (Dakare). This will most likely be the same place as the 5pm get together (dinner, BBQ?) for our group. She will let us know during the day on May 9.
When you call Finike marina on vhf 73 upon arrival please tell them you are with the Levante Basin Rally as they are co-ordinating the mooring.
Fred (Escape Key) has suggested our rally use vhf 15 as the communications channel. If you want to find or call anyone standby on 15.

More Finike Details

Dear Friends,
For those of you that will make it and judging by the weather forecast it will be most of you we will still have our group meeting on May 9 and the dinner following. Dakare intends to be here May 8 to finish with the organisation of the dinner. For those that decide not to be here on May 9 we will give you a brief summary of the group meeting when you arrive, The events held for us by the marina on May 10 and 11 are in addition to those on May 9th.
Our time in Cyprus will not be shortened by the length of stay in Finike as we are not expected in Syria until May 30, allways weather permitting. This still leaves us 17 days to see Cyprus.
If any of you seeTwo Step, Emperor or Kelearin in your travels please ask them to contact us immediately with their passport details for Syria.
See you soon,

I have spoke to two of the dive schools here in Marmaris and will get back to you when I have compiled a list. The one dive master is due to visit me this weekend and then I will inform the group after I get his data. Would the interested parties please email me back with this information; country of origin, experience level and desired course itinerary (i.e. all open water or some pool training)and dates you would be available for the course. I have asked Stay dry, (See Below)
We met with Servet Karnap Sunday afternoon, Jan. 23. Servet is the operator of Deep Diving School here in Marmaris, a PADI dive center.
He offered the following package:
3-5 academic and in-pool sessions, followed by at least one open water dive, to PADI standards, perhaps 17 meters. There would be a "soft" exam, and assuming the minimum PADI standards were met, the issuance of a temporary PADI Open Water Dive Card, to be followed in the mail with the permanent PADI card.
The price would be 300 Euros per person, with a minimum of 4 students. This price would include all equipment (including 5.5mm wet suits for the open water dive) and air as needed. The purchase of the PADI instruction book would be extra. He said that he would also give us a book to use however he would like it back or maybe we could get it copied.
He would need to complete this course before mid-March, as the rest of March and April is his time to prepare his two dive boats for the upcoming summer season. We discussed perhaps starting Thursday, March 3, for the first academic session, followed by a pool session that same day. The target would then be to do three more pool sessions the following week, hoping to aim for the open water dive the week of March 14.
For already certified divers who wish a refresher session, he would charge 50 Euros for each such refresher session (be it in the pool or open water).
He seems interested in doing the work, and prepared to fulfill his obligations as Dive Instructor with individual attention.
I also met with Nevzat Esen, operator of Professional Diving Centre also here in Marmaris, and also a PADI diving center.
His rates are also 300 Euro for a certification course, all to be conducted in open water, also all equipment included. He would start off a beach (3-4 meters, with individual attention) and then progress to group dives off his dive boat. There would be two dives per day and lunch provided in his price. Academic instruction included. PADI certification upon satisfactorily completing course, as above we assume.
His price for refresher divers would be 40 Euros per day.
This second operator is willing to start the course immediately.
Please respond with your preferences as soon as possible. This Thursday I leave Turkey for the month of February, and would like to complete these arrangements prior to that time.
On a personal note I felt that the dive master Servet Karnap with whom I spoke today was more personal and professional. Lets swim! Cheers Patricia

FYI: upon reviewing diving literature I have become aware that certain medication and medical conditions are inconsistent with diving, that is why I have included the taking medication line. I do not need to know your status however it may behoove you to talk to our dive instructor.

After discussing Syria with four of our boats in Marmaris earlier this month we are booking two tours with the operator in Lattakia. You will recall this operator will get our visas for us if we take a tour with him. These tours are as follows;
Tour 1, depart 9 am June 1 and return 7 pm June 2. Tour Northern Syria including The Basilica of St. Simon the Stylit, Ugarit (the origin of our alphabet), the Salah Al-Din Fortress and then overnight in Aleppo giving us time to visit the souk(bazaar), the National Museum, the Citadel, the Christian Quarter and the great Mosque of the Umayyads.
Tour 2, depart 9 am June 4 and return 7 pm June 7. Tour Southern Syria including Crac Des Chevaliers and then into the desert to Palmyra. We will stay in a hotel in the desert town of Palmyra and have the opportunity to see the ruins at sunset and again at sunrise, make sure your cameras are in top form for this. We will then continue into the desert lunching and shopping in a Bedouin tent and then an afternoon stop at the Bagdad cafe before entering Damascus. We will stay 2 nights in Damascus as there is so much to see including the Citadel, the Great Mosque, the souk and the National Museum. We will have time to explore parts of Damascus on our own before the bus ride back to the boats.
These tour itineraries are not cast in stone we can revise them later as more of you have time to study what you would like to do. This suggested itinerary gives us a base line from which to firm up and negotiate prices.

Dear Friends,
We have been asked to again send out the details of our two tours in Syria. They are as follows. We need to give the tour operator a count of hotel rooms so we will be asking you your intentions during the May 9 group meeting.
Later today we will be sending all of you a summary of mooring costs for the entire rally. This has been done for each individual harbour over the winter but a summary will come in handy..

I received some info regarding a couple of options for
a one day bus tour to Baalbek and Aanjar. The rest of
the area is easy to see via local busses from Jounieh
or Beirut. (Of course, this is all dependent on
whether the region is settled enough for us to go
there.)
Option 1:
Well noted that you will be approximately 24 persons
who want to
participate
to Baalbeck and Anjar visits during June 2005
Visits of Baalbeck and Anjar with lunch.
Number of persons in the bus: USD
15 - 19 persons: $65
20 - 24 persons: $60
Above rates include:
- Transportation in air conditioned bus with driver
- All entrance fees
- Guidance fees
- Lunch including 1 glass of Arak or one Soft drink
per person.
- VAT (10%)
Option 2:
Dear Mr. Joy,
Further to your mail of yesterday, kindly note that
transportation cost
during the day of Baalbeck is already include in the
rates mentioned in
my
mail of yesterday
- The valley that you ask about is the Quadisha
valley. If you want to
include this visit, the group will go to Baalbeck and
after from the
road of
Cedars to Kozhaya whish is a part of Quadisha valley.
The group will
visit
only Kozhaya monastery.
In this case, departure must be done at 07.00 in the
morning. The group
will
not visit Anjar. The supplement will be for this visit
$3 per person.

Bill tells me that touring Israel by car is very
feasible. There are a few of us interested in
driving down to Elat via the crater and staying
overnight in a Bedouin Tent along the way or way back.
Anyone else interested in this, let me know.
Egypt:
Cairo is 200K from either Port Said or Alexandria.
Was thinking that we could divide the trip up in half,
by maybe doing an overnighter in Cairo, giving us two
days to see the museum and the pyramids (all the tours
squish this into one day with departure on the train
to Aswan that night, including our drive from the
port to Cairo -- way too hurried for my taste!!).
Then leaving from Alexandria for the trip to the train
station for the Nile cruise portion. Jim and I like
to leave the beaten path from time to time and are
exploring the possibility of doing the Nile portion
totally on a Felucca rather than a cruise ship. Others
interested in this possibility, let me know and I will
get more details.
As for the train trip to Aswan, it is always scheduled
as an overniter. If we separate the Cairo/Luxor
portions we can possibly do a day trip to Luxor.. If
not we can opt to get sleeping cars, allowing us to be
freshened up for the touring the next day. The
sleeping portion would cost an extra $40 per person
each way and includes breakfast and dinner.

Here is a suggested Itinerary for a tour in Egypt. The source of the information is the Lonely Planet guide for Egypt, the itineraries section. The travel method can be a combination of bus and train or a car or van rental. The suggested duration is 7 days. The starting point can be Cairo or Alexandria but for the purposes of this discussion we will start in Cairo.
1. Travel south from Cairo to Luxor seeing the Valley of the Kings. Take a sail on the Nile on a felluca to Edfu.
2. Back track a little bit north to the Valley of the Kings and take the road east to Hurghada. Visit Abu Thig just north of Hurghada.
3. Take the ferry across the Red Sea to Sharm el Sheikh and enjoy the resort. Dive if you wish at the Ras Mohammed National Park on the southern tip of the Sinai.
4. Travel north to Mount Sinai and then on to St Katherines Monastery.
5. Travel north to Serabit al-Kadim to see the ruins, stop and swim at the Hammam Faraún springs
6. Travel north through Suez and then onto Cairo.
Suggested night time stop overs are; Luxor, Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh (2 nights) and then the Moon Beach Resort Hotel in Ras Sudr on the west coast of the Sinai.

Karen and I, Bill and Jean and about 38 other yachties just got back from the Pamukkale Vineyard trip. It was great fun and so were the wine discounts. We struck up a nice relationship with the owner of the vineyard and based upon that we will try to organize a closed party for the Levante Rally people if there is enough interest.
In order to do this, I will need to know ASAP, the earliest date that each of you would be available to participate in such a party here in Marmaris. Based upon the information you provide, Karen and I will try to organize the vineyard to come to Netsel, probably A dock, on a day convenient to all. I suspect that this will not be until the April time frame or later, so please let me know when you will be available. If not interested, please indicate the same so we will not be anticipating a response from you.

Southern Cyprus, Lebanon and Israel
|
We have the wine touring guide for southern Cyprus and will be driving it. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join us. We will rent a van big enough to haul all the wine back to our boats. The tour takes three days of driving into the most scenic areas of Southern Cyprus and includes monasteries and old vineyard farms.
Lebanon has a good wine producing industry and our organised tours will include these stops.
Israel has good wine production and as you tour the country in your rented car or van you can make these vineyards destinations.

Health and Safety
Chair (Manny on Moonraker)
and auxilliary Chair: (Salah Yashruti- M/V Liljana),
Note: I have been informally informed that Sallah wishes to ammend what I have written below. He will do so upon his return. Until then, pls accept what I have transcribed with limited credence until that time. Thanks- Dan
Medical Guidance:
1/20/04 - Dan on Dakare just completed an interview with Salah concerning preparatory issues for the rally wrt health and welfare. The material that follows is Dan's first cut of his interview with Salah. Pls excuse any mispellings or misrepresentations. Salah has not had a chance to review and correct the material that follows prior to his departure. Salah will return late Febriary. Upon Salah's return, he will review the material that follows and make corrections as necessary. Sooooo, for the time being, please consider this material to be a straw man. Salah has also indicated that after his return he is willing to have a special meeting for Rally participants to discuss issues wrt:
 Illness
 Accidents/Trauma
 Alergic Reactions
 Preparatory Strategies
In addition, Salah has offered to field both general and personal questions from Rally members. He also offered to review the medical first aid kits of rallly members for those who would like to have such inspections performed. This meeting will be scheduled sometime in the beginning of March. Furhter definition of all of these points await Salah's return.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Salah for his support. It is nice to know that we have him on board.
General Guidance:
Other than coordinating with your personal physician, especially if you have specific conditions that must be taken into consideration, Salah believes strongly that no special inoculations needs to be performed for the Levant Basin countries if your inoculations are in accordance with your home country. He did suggest the following however:
Tetanus is a big problem. If your tetanus shots are 5-10 years old, you should consider getting a booster shot.
Hygiene is of extreme importance:
Watch what you put in your mouth and the cleanliness of your hands when you do it.
Do not pet animals without washing after petting animals. They carry many germs in those regions.
Do not use public hand towels to dry your hands in restaurants. Use paper towels or bring something with you
Excise to the greatest degree possible hygienic habits
Have something to take if you show symptomatic problems:
Take Lomotil or Imodium AD upon first signs of gastronomical /intestinal problems. Take 2 tablets immediately followed by no more than 4-6 tablets / day. These medications should slow down the activity of the gastrointestinal track. Do not take these medications if you do not have cramps and diarrhea. If you are constipated stop taking the pills. What is making you sick could be a virus or a change in diet. You could have Travelers Intestinal Flu or Traveler's Diarrhea. If the latter is the case you can deal with the problem logically. Amend your diet, reduce spices and / or alcohol. Else, if you are taking medication and no change is seen in less than 48 hours, antibiotics should be considered.
Take Tetracycline ( or long lasting Vibramycin) or amoxicillin. If the situation doesn't improve, seek medical help, do not continue to self medicate. Be careful of allergic reactions that can be caused by drugs, fatty foods, pets/animals, dust, etc. You should already be aware of these problems if you currently have them. For people with high blood pressure or heart problems be sure to have a blood pressure measuring device in your medical chest.
For those requiring inoculations, Salah believes that they can be obtained locally at the Marmaris pharmacies. He indicated that a Tetanus booster shot should run about TL7.5
Upon his return he will be happy to provide further assistance if necessary.
Salah also offered to be available for consultation via SMS during the Rally. The current thinking is that if an emergency arises, that the concerned party would send Salah an SMS message and Salah would respond setting up a better form of impromptu communications. details will be worked out upon Salahs's return.

Note: The following health information has been provided by Manny on Moonraker. It was prepared by Moonraker's Health Center in the United States. It is quite comprehensive. Please note that the orignal TiFF images supplied by Moonraker were scanned by OCR and some corrections were applied. I have included the original TIFF images as an alternative viewing mechanism. The text documents have been stored in MSWord format. Although I cannot vouch for every machine that may access these files, you should be able to both view and download (and save) these files to your hard drive. Downloading of the text file is much faster than downloading the TIFF files.

From the experienced desk of Soleil Sans FIn:
Remember that we all will be loosing buckets of water through perspiration. We will be drinking bottled water which will leave our bodies very low on minerals required for proper body function. We found a powdered product in Greece named ALMORA. This small envelop dissolved in a cup of cold water each morning tops you up for the day. It is like drinking a couple of gallons of Gatorade. There are other products available, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
Personal Experiences wrt Vaccinations here in Marmaris:
I had read all of the material presented above, as well as reviewing the cruising books we have on the Mid East. Needless to say, the more info I got, the more confused things seemed to be. From the cruising guides I got the follwoing recommended shots:
 Tetanus
 Dyptheria
 Booster - Polio
 Typhoid
 Hepatitis A
 Hepatitis B
The physician Dr. Izmut at:
AhuHetman Hospital (Private)
Hatipirimi # 167 Marmaris
Phone 252-413-14-15
recommended that I first take a Hepatitis B blood test to see if I needed a booster. They also recommended that I get a new Tetanus and Hepatitis A shot. They indicated that they did not believe that I needed the Dyptheria and the Polio booster shots. Finally, they indicated that only the public hospitals could give a Typhoid shot and they recommended that I go to the hospital near Tansas.

Levante Basin Logo Gear
We are ordering polo shirts, ladies tank top/mens vests, Boat Banner , baseball caps and ladies scarves with our Levante Basin Rally 2005 logo at a shop here in Marmaris. At the request of the ladies the scarf and tank top/vest were added. If you want your boat name also embroided on these items this can be arranged individually at the shop in Marmaris after delivery. Price TBA.
In order to get the sizes correct we request you measure your favorite shirt just below the armpits and we will determine your size M,L, XL, XXL . Turkish sizes run small!
Due to the many colors of the flags in this logo all logos will be embroided not silk screened. All shirts will be of best quality available. Allow for some shrinkage.
The details are as follows:
Polos - white with dark blue collars . Small logo on front (reduced logo without the flags), full flag logo on back. Please specify size by CM's. Cost 18 lira each.
Ladies Tank/ Men's vest - white with blue trim. Embroided full flag Logo on back. Please specify size by CM's. Cost 8 lira each.
Vertical Boat Banner - White 150 cm high with 2 no 30 cm embroided full flag logos on top and bottom on reverse side. Cost 30 lira each.
Ladies scarf - white with one embroided logo. 150cm long. Cost 10 lira
Baseball cap - white with navy brim. Made of lightweight material with again small embroided logo(no flags) . Cost 7 lira each.
There is no requirement to purchase any of these items, all are sold at cost and prices are based on estimated quantities. However it would be great if all boats would at least purchase a boat banner to fly in harbors.
Also each boat regardless of whether you order any of the above will be asked to contribute 45 lira to cover the cost of some giveaway items, mostly hats which we will have made to present to harbor and marina officials who have helped out our rally. It's a small cost to pay for in some cases free or reduced cost facilities. We hope all participants will agree.
We will need payment of all items upon ordering. Orders are requested by 11 March so that we can have delivery by end March. For boats NOT in Marmaris before 11 March please contact us separately regarding your order or arrange payment through a friend in the rally.
The design and selection of all these items has been a group effort by the Rally members here in Marmaris in particular thanks to Moose for his expertise in computer logo design.

As you know we have had to develop unique identification for each boat and identity tags for each person to distinguish us from those that say they will be tagging along. This along with the copying and binding of our cruising guide has meant that we need to collect an additional 20 Turkish Lira from each boat to cover the costs. By copy of this e-mail we ask that someone from Yacht Marine collect this from Kelearin, Ginny, Moonraker, Equus and Moose, Emperor is fully paid up. Please let us know when this is available for collection.
In addition we need to develop a standard spreadsheet for the crew lists that we will need to provide in a uniform manner in each port. Could someone with excel capabilities please contact us a we need help to produce this and distribute it to each boat.
Once we have received the delivery of the merchandise we will send out our last newsletter before meeting in Finike.

Weather Sig
Chair: Steve (EQUUS)
Steve will be the coordination point for weather information during the rally. A strawman plan for the rally is to have a weather chat on VHF radio on all pertinent days. Steve has volunteered to access weather via the Internet and this information would be augmented by others (NAVTEX Reports, GRIB files, and direct feed NOAA Satellite Pictures.) Individuals who can provide weather information for the rally are urged to contact Steve.

Harbors in Cyprus
|
The harbor master for Latzi, Southern Cyprus is also the harbor master in Paphos (We met him there last summer). He is concerned about all 12 of our boats being able to fit into the new Latzi marina as it is nearly booked with residents. As a back up only he has suggested that some of us may have to moor in Paphos while the balance are in Latzi. We will know the final number when I call him before we leave Finike. There is a beautiful anchorage between Paphos and Latzi, Fontana Amorosa (fountain of love) which is perfect for swimming snorkeling and diving (we anchored there for a couple of nights last summer) so we can make a 4 or 5 day combination with these three stopping points in Southern Cyprus. The GPS waypoint for Paphos is 34 45 1N 32 24 4E (We spent a wonderful week in this harbour last summer). The waypoint for the Fontana Amorosa anchorage is 35 05 166N 32 18 384E.
